- ASCII - (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)- The defacto
world wide standard for the code numbers used by computers to represent all the upper
and lower-case Latin letters, numbers, punctuation, etc...
- Baud- The baud rate of a modem is how many bits it can send or receive per second.
- BBS (Bulletin Board System)- A virtual bulletin board. People can log on to the board
and post announcements, files and other information for other people to see and use.
- Bit- The smallest unit of computerized data.
- Browser- A program that enables you to view and search for information on the
internet.,
- Byte- A unit of computerized data. There are usually 8 bits in a byte and it represents a
single character.
- Cookie- Usually refers to information sent to your browser to store for future use. Ex:
logins, registration info., user preferences, etc...
- Cyberspace- A term used to describe the whole range of information resources
available through computer networks.
- Domain Name- The unique name that identifies an Internet Site. Ex:
carencromiddle.com
- E-mail (Electronic Mail)- Messages sent from one person to another via computers.
- Ethernet- A common method of networking computers in a LAN (Local Area
Network). It can handle about 10 million bits per second and can be used on almost any
computer.
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol)- A common method of moving files between internet
sites. A special way of logging in to another internet site for the purpose of sending or
retrieving files.
- Gigabyte- One thousand megabytes.
- Gopher- A method of making menus of material available over the internet.
- Hit- Usually refers to the number of times a web-site is accessed.
- Homepage- Usually refers to the main web page of a business, organization, or person.
- HTML (HyperText Markup Language)- A coding language used to create
Hypertext documents for use on the World Wide Web.
- HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)- A protocol for moving Hypertext files across
the internet.
- Hypertext- Any text that contains links to another document.
- Intranet- A private network inside an organization that uses the same type of software
found in a public internet, but only for private use.
- IP (Internet Protocol) Number- A unique number of 4 parts separted by periods. Ex:
321.114.457.4
- ISP (Internet Service Provider)- A company that provides access to the internet,
usually for a fee.
- Java- A programming language invented by Sun Microsystems designed for writing
programs that can be safely downloaded to your computer and immediately run without
fear of viruses.
- Kilobyte- One thousand bytes.
- Megabyte- One million bytes or One thousand kilobytes.
- Mirror- Normally refers to an exact copy or duplicate of a web site. This allows the
information on the sites to be easily accessed by a large number of people.
- Modem (MOdulator, DEModulator)- Used to connect your computer to a phone line
which then allows your computer to connect to another computer.
- Network- Two or more computers connected together which share resources.
- Newsgroup- The term used to describe discussion groups on USENET.
- Port- The place where information goes into or out of a computer.
- Posting- The term used to describe a message entered into a network system.
- Server- The computer or software package used to connect to the internet. Ex: AOL
(America Online), Net-Connect, The LPSB server.
- Spam- An attempt by people to send the same message to a large number of people
who did not ask for it.
- UNIX- A computer operating system. UNIX is designed to be used by many people at the same time. It is the most common operating system for servers on the internet.
- URL (Uniform Resource Locator)- The standard form of giving any address for a
resource on the internet. Ex: http;//www.lft.k12.la.us/CarencroMid/
- USENET- A world wide system of discussion groups with messages sent among
thousands of computers. USENET is decentralized with over 10,000 discussion areas
called Newsgroups.
- WWW (World Wide Web)- The whole collective of resources that can be accessed
using the Internet.
